This short story by writer W.W. Jacobs begins in the White family home in England on a dark and stormy night. The Whites are expecting the visit of an old family friend who has been in the army in India recently and they have invited him to stop by and share his adventures. While there, their friend shows them a monkey's paw, and tells them that it has been cursed and given the power to grant three wishes. The family shows a great interest in the talisman, but their friend warns them that it is evil, and not to use it. After their friend leaves, the family makes a wish- and their troubles soon begin. The story is a reminder of the old maxim- be careful what you wish for.
